About Me

I started hand embroidering gifts for friends and family.

Honestly, they were pretty bad, but they help me practice and practice and eventually get better with the craft.

Throughout this exploration process, I fell in love with the possibilities of the thread and the needle and started to create more elaborated designs, mixing with acrylic or watercolor painting, beading, appliqués or felt patches from time to time.

Currently I do commission works and teach workshops around my community

If you want to learn more about my journey and my art, see my complete “About Me” page.

Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón
(July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954)

Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self-portraits, and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico. Also inspired by the country’s popular culture, she employed a naïve folk art style to explore questions of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society.

Her paintings often had strong autobiographical elements and mixed realism with fantasy. In addition to belonging to the post-revolutionary Mexicayotl movement, which sought to define a Mexican identity, Kahlo has been described as a surrealist or magical realist. She is known for painting about her experience of chronic pain, so that’s why for me she’s like the official santa patrona of pain and aches.

She married twice, divorced once and separated countless times from Diego Rivera and both had numerous affairs, hobnobbed with Communists, capitalists and literati and managed to create some of the most compelling visual images of the 20th century. Filled with such luminaries as writer André Breton, sculptor Isamu Noguchi, playwright Clare Boothe Luce and exiled Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky, Kahlo’s life played out on a phantasmagorical canvas.

She enjoyed life fully and passionately. “It is not worthwhile,” she once said, “to leave this world without having had a little fun in life.”

I think switching the name of my class from Hand embroidery to Textile Arts was an amazing idea.
At the beginning, I was a little nervous with the change because I didn’t know if parents and kids would be interested in exploring a class for a whole week during summer that would imply working with fiber everyday.

I was also a bit insecure of jumping into mix media with kids. I had done it myself before with some of my pieces, but I hadn’t taught anyone else something like this. So it was also a new venture for me.

But I just love it!!!

I love how the kids are embracing this expressive and soft techniques. I’m amazed by their willingness to experience and combine stitches with painting, quilting with bargello needlework, beads or sequins with embroidery, or everything at the same time.

Here’s a little bit of their amazing creations this week.

And you still have a chance to sign up your kids for our last week of Art Summer Camps at the @elpasomuseumofart
Camp will run from Monday July 21 to Friday July 25 from 10am to 1pm.

For more information and registration, please visit the museum’s socials.

Hola!
Hope to see you this week at the studio.

This week’s classes are inspired on the life and works of Frida Kahlo.

And remember that this Saturday July 12th I’m hosting @christin.m.a here at the Cushi Cushi 915 Studio.
She’ll be teaching us how to work with illustrative mark-making and I’ll help you translate these into embroidery stitches to create your own patch.

Class is $60 per person with materials included and a portion of your ticket will be donated to @lasamericasimmigrantadvocacy
There’s only few spots available for this class so don’t wait. Sign up for this special class at @loveletters.ep

And on Sunday, I’m offering a big project class where you’ll learn how I’ve made some of my previous Frida themed fiber art pieces. This class requires previous practice of hand embroidery stitches such as pin wheel flower, satin stitch, French knots, basket weave stitch, Rhodes stitch and leaf stitch. We’ll be working with different fabrics, yarns, threads and needles, so it’ll be a fiber wonderland!!!
This is a big project and a small class.
Cost is $65 and there’s only 6 spots available.

For all my classes, you can find the registration links on my bio or just visit my website cushicushi915.com

“They thought I was a Surrealist but I wasn’t.
I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality.”

- Frida Kahlo
6 July 1907 – 13 July 1954

An icon.
A woman that tried to live in her own terms most of her life.
Born with some privilege but also often discriminated and pushed back because of her own personal beliefs and political affiliation, and of course, because she was a woman.
And a very outspoken one.

A big name in Mexico’s contemporary history and art that got recognition only after her death.

Now she’s everywhere.
We eat her, we wear her, we display her in any imaginable way.
And although I don’t see this as a bad thing, I really hope we can be more willing to learn about her in the same way we consume her.
Read about her.
Watch documentaries about her, not only Salma’s movie.
Maybe plan a visit to her home in Mexico City one day!
And bring your families! Take your kids!

Learn about her world and what inspire her, and I’ll assure you, you’ll understand so much more about Mexico, about the importance of her art and you most definitely will be inspired!

Viva Frida!!

Children are amazing!
They’re a constant reminder to all of us of how life needs nurturing, and also, that learning really never ends, just like creativity, and we all have it in us.

I’m so happy these kiddos got to stay away from screens at least for 3 hours everyday last week with us at the @elpasomuseumofart
It fills my heart with joy every time I see them mastering a new stitch and then wanting to do more and more each session.
To feed their curiosity and creativity, they really just need our time and patience. That’s all.

So thank you parents for seeing art as an investment and not as an expense for your children. Thank you for trusting us with your most precious.
Thank you for supporting our community museums and programs.

We’ll be back on Monday July 7th for another week of fun and art you can still sign up your kids.
So, ahí los wacho!!❤️🪡❤️

Kiddos can benefit sooooo much from stitching!
Hand embroidery enhances their fine motor skills, and hand-eye coordination, while also promoting creativity, patience and composure.

I’m creating a few DIY embroidery kits for kiddos.
These include pre-trace felt fabric cutouts, needle, thread and poly filling to make a fluffy and cute plushie.

I’ll have them available this Saturday afternoon at the Night Pop Up Market at @marginnotesbookbar (from 7pm to 11pm) along with other cute art pieces, wearable art and DIY kits so you can get crafty while sipping a glass (or two!😉) of wine.

Hope to see you there!
