About Me
I started hand embroidering gifts for friends and family.
Honestly, they were pretty bad, but they help me practice and practice and eventually get better with the craft.
Throughout this exploration process, I fell in love with the possibilities of the thread and the needle and started to create more elaborated designs, mixing with acrylic or watercolor painting, beading, appliqués or felt patches from time to time.
Currently I do commission works and teach workshops around my community
If you want to learn more about my journey and my art, see my complete “About Me” page.

Hola friends!!
This is a PSA for my dear friends at @ktep.fm 88.5FM and for one of EP’s most hard working and passionate community givers, my dear friends @marinamonsis
For 75 years, KTEP has been a trusted voice for arts, culture, news, and storytelling in our region—and @cushicushi915 has been part of that story...
I’m super grateful to KTEP!!!
Right now, they’re facing an unexpected $204,592 funding gap, and they need our support to bridge it.
So let’s donate and help our local university radio station!!!
Follow and visit @ktep.fm and @marinamonsis or visit my stories to find the link to donate.

I’ll have 2 pieces in this show and while there, you can also check the other 2 pieces I have in their other current show ‘Joy Abounds’.
I’m also exhibiting at the @elpasoartassociation Crossland Gallery on Paisano St in their show “Fresh Faces” and their opening reception will be also this Saturday August 9th from 5pm to 8pm.
It’s a weekend with lots of Art! Mucho arte!!🙌🪡🙌

Today’s World Embroidery Day and to celebrate it I’m doing a brief recap of the CushiCushi915 journey.
It’s definitely been a roller coaster!
A journey full of ups and downs: losses, heartbreaking moments, immense gratitude, mistakes, triumphs, failures, challenges, uncertainty, lots of imposter’s syndrome and joy… over-bounding moments of joy!!
Embroidery gave me certainty and calmness.
It opened me to creativity in a way I hadn’t thought possible before in my life.
It helped me bring back the joy of designing and creating like when I was in college.
It reframed my way of approaching art and made it more open and more free, with less restrictions and insecurities and more willingness to just try again and again and again.
It also brought back one of my beloved things in life: education.
Before embroidery and fiber arts, I used to teach dance. I stopped when I moved to El Paso. And I forgot how much I missed it and how much I love being part of a person’s learning process.
And now, I feel so at home when facilitating a class.
Embroidery helps me stay curious, playful, to keep exploring and to rediscover the love of creating and sharing with people.
CushiCushi915 is more than just art and classes.
Is home.
A safe space for you to feel free and just create while also connecting with others and build a strong comunidad❤️
Sigamos bordando fronteras!❤️🫶🏽❤️

Back to school: fiber artist edition!!🙌🪡🙌
With my “kids” already attending college and high school, I really don’t need to buy much for their back to school.
I’m also blessed to not have them asking me for the latest trends in clothes, tech or shoes because they really just don’t care.
So, this is my first “back to school” season where I’m treating MYSELF to some materials that will help me with my own art projects💪🏽🪡💪🏽
So in a way, I’m the one going “back to art school”🙌🪡🙌
Do you also get excited or have a special love for any material, utensil or anything else that makes you feel like you’re back to learning?!
Tell me about it! I would love to read your comments!❤️

Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón
(July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954)
Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self-portraits, and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico. Also inspired by the country’s popular culture, she employed a naïve folk art style to explore questions of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society.
Her paintings often had strong autobiographical elements and mixed realism with fantasy. In addition to belonging to the post-revolutionary Mexicayotl movement, which sought to define a Mexican identity, Kahlo has been described as a surrealist or magical realist. She is known for painting about her experience of chronic pain, so that’s why for me she’s like the official santa patrona of pain and aches.
She married twice, divorced once and separated countless times from Diego Rivera and both had numerous affairs, hobnobbed with Communists, capitalists and literati and managed to create some of the most compelling visual images of the 20th century. Filled with such luminaries as writer André Breton, sculptor Isamu Noguchi, playwright Clare Boothe Luce and exiled Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky, Kahlo’s life played out on a phantasmagorical canvas.
She enjoyed life fully and passionately. “It is not worthwhile,” she once said, “to leave this world without having had a little fun in life.”

I think switching the name of my class from Hand embroidery to Textile Arts was an amazing idea.
At the beginning, I was a little nervous with the change because I didn’t know if parents and kids would be interested in exploring a class for a whole week during summer that would imply working with fiber everyday.
I was also a bit insecure of jumping into mix media with kids. I had done it myself before with some of my pieces, but I hadn’t taught anyone else something like this. So it was also a new venture for me.
But I just love it!!!
I love how the kids are embracing this expressive and soft techniques. I’m amazed by their willingness to experience and combine stitches with painting, quilting with bargello needlework, beads or sequins with embroidery, or everything at the same time.
Here’s a little bit of their amazing creations this week.
And you still have a chance to sign up your kids for our last week of Art Summer Camps at the @elpasomuseumofart
Camp will run from Monday July 21 to Friday July 25 from 10am to 1pm.
For more information and registration, please visit the museum’s socials.
