Tenango Hand Embroidery Workshop
Tenangos are a type of hand embroidered textile that has been made since 1960 in the municipalities of Tenango de Doria, Hidalgo, and Pahuatlán de Valle, Puebla, both located in central Mexico.
They are made on canvas fabric of different sizes, in which the embroiderers draw the flora and fauna of the region and scenes of daily and festive life.
Each figure is embroidered with cotton threads with a stitching technique that look like a very packed herringbone stitch
✅ In this class we’ll cover:
- History of Bordado Tenango.
- Drawing for Tenango: Origin of these designs, and how to (since Tenango embroidery has already been through a lot of plagiarism and cultural appropriation no patterns will be provided, but you will learn how to create your own)
- Tenango embroidery technique exercises (with materials included).
✅ Price includes:
- 4 hour instruction.
- All materials for drawing and hand embroidery exercises.
- Materials to create ONE Tenango pillow (measuring approximately 19″ by 19″) designed and drawn by Mexican Artisan Silvia Mateos originary from Tulancingo, Hidalgo, Mexico (you can find her on FB as Manitas Bordando).
- MATERIALS INCLUDE: Mexican canvas Pillowcase with hand drawn Tenango pattern, 20 colorful skins of “hilo vela” (the thread used by artisans in Mexico to embroider Tenangos), beechwood 7 inch embroidery hoop, embroidery scissors and embroidery needle.
- Light Snacks and refreshments.
